Feb 21, 04 Afghan Art in Exile
International artist Sami Nadi will demonstrate for museum visitors his plaster sculpting technique of portraiture. Nadi was born and raised in Kabul, Afghanistan, where his love and study of sculpture began at an early age. A student at the Sana’eh School of Art in Kabul and the College of Fine Arts at Kabul University, Nadi won a scholarship in 1981 to Academy of Fine Arts in Minsk (in Belarus, then part of the Soviet Union), where he studied under a classical Italian sculptor. Exiled from his native land, Nadi lived in Germany for several years and in 2001 moved to the U.S.; he now lives in the East Bay. He has shown his work in Italy, Germany, France, England, and the U.S. Many of Nadi’s portraits illustrate archetypes of Afghan culture: musicians, shopkeepers, and women—some shrouded in bhurkas, others shown emerging from this emblem of Taliban oppression.

Nov 20, 2003 Ensemble Kabul
Ensemble Kabul is devoted to the performance of traditional Afghan music and has striven to maintain the richness of Afghan culture. Their repertoire includes a large selection of multi-ethnic Afghani music at the crossroads of Indian, Persian, and Arabic traditions: airy melodies of Tajik minstrels, ecstatic festival songs, and classical ragas with a subtle Indian flavor, together with brilliant instrumental pieces incorporating lute, rubab, tabla, santur, Eastern harmonium, and other native instruments. The Ensemble performs with Ustad Farida Mahwash, a powerhouse singer who was Afghanistan's top radio star in the 1970s. Mahwash is the only female vocalist awarded the celebrity status of "Ustad" (master musician) by her native country.

Marc 18, 03 Women in Afghanistan after the Taliban
First-hand accounts from the heart of the War on Terror will punctuate Soheir Stolba's lecture. Stolba, a medical anthropologist, recently visited Afghanistan to help develop women's organizations to improve literacy, provide vocational training for widows and assist women in starting small businesses. While there, she witnessed the cruelty of the Taliban regime and the resilience of the Afghan women. She will share their stories of courage in the face of war, poverty and oppression.

Mar 13, 2003 Rebuilding Afghanistan
Ms. Rachel Sahar - Lecturer, O.C. Human Relations Commission
Program Information: The terrorist’s attack of 9-11, and the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan that followed, kept worldwide attention on Afghanistan. The stories of the Taliban and Osaka bin Laden and the oppression of women have created an image of a medieval nation ruled over by merciless warlords and despots, but Afghanistan is far more. It stands as a country with a perilous journey ahead of it. Thursday’s Cox Forum guests, both from Afghanistan, will offer you an insightful look at the Afghanistan of today. A country struggling to rebuild after decades of war and political unrest.

Aug 26, 2002 Afghanistan Year 1380
Presented by  The IRC and the San Diego Public Library -
Filmed in Afghanistan in 2001 and early 2002, this documentary follows the continuing challenges for surgeon Gino Strada and medical coordinator Kate Rowlands, from the human rights group "Emergency." In an attempt to guarantee medical and humanitarian support to civilian war victims, they joined forces to set up a hospital in Kabul, only to see the facility shut down by the Taliban. In October, 2001, even with the city under heavy attack, they re-opened the installation. Certain scenes in the film are very graphics.
